The water filtration market is full of promises. 99.9999% efficiency, certified, laboratory tested — these words appear on almost every box. The problem: they don't all mean the same thing. Here are 4 concrete criteria to tell the difference.

Manufacturer traceability

A serious brand knows exactly where and by whom its filter is made — and says so clearly. If the website only mentions "developed in Europe" without ever naming the factory or country of production, that's a red flag.

Referenced manufacturers like Coldstream (UK) or Doulton (UK) publish their production sites, certifications and quality control processes. This level of transparency is not the norm — it's precisely what defines it.

Factory certifications

A good factory is not just an assembly workshop. It is certified to test what it produces, with reproducible and auditable results. Two labels are the international reference:

ISO/IEC 17025NSF / IAPMO

A filter tested by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory provides real performance guarantees. Conversely, some brands cite "SGS tests" without specifying the site — the SGS Xiamen laboratory is not ISO/IEC 17025 accredited. These reports are internal and have no certifying value.

What is ISO/IEC 17025? It's the international standard that certifies a laboratory is competent to produce reliable test results. In practice: an accredited lab is regularly audited, its methods are verified, and its results are recognized worldwide. Without this accreditation, a test report has no legal or comparative value.

Transparency of test results

A reliable filter publishes its complete reports: laboratory name, accreditation number, standards followed. If you see the mention "For internal research only" on a report, it means the test is not certifying — it is an internal evaluation, without international recognition.

Envirotek / IAPMO (Coldstream) reports are ISO/IEC 17025 recognized. SGS Xiamen tests (used by some competing brands) are not.

NSF/ANSI certifications

These are the world references in filtration. Unlike a one-time test, NSF/ANSI certification involves regular audits and measurements over time. It covers:

A P231 certified filter can treat microbiologically unsafe water — river water, rainwater, in crisis situations. An uncertified filter remains limited to already potable water, regardless of its marketing claims.

3 questions before buying

If any answer is no — be careful.

  • Does the brand clearly indicate who makes the product and where?
  • Is the cited laboratory ISO/IEC 17025 accredited?
  • Does the filter have an official NSF, IAPMO or ISO certification?

Choosing a water filter means choosing a brand that proves what it claims. NSF/ANSI certifications and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation are the only reliable benchmarks. Everything else — internal comparisons, proprietary labels, figures without sources — only commits those who publish them.
